Kumusta ka? Ayos lang.

We ask “Kumusta ka?” every day, and we almost always hear “Ayos lang.” It’s rarely the whole story.

Kumustahan started with one wish: to really talk with the people we love. Not small talk, not another update. So the questions went on cards, one question at a time, with everyone at the table listening. The name is the Filipino word for catching up, kumustahan: people asking each other how they really are.

What it is

Kumustahan is a conversation card app for iPhone and Android with 1,200 cards across 7 decks: Getting to know, Just for fun, Reflect, Lifegroup & Faith, Couples, Barkada and Icebreakers. Every card has a question on the front and a short reflection on the back, in English and Filipino. The Tagalog is written for talking, not machine-translated.

In setup you pick your decks, how many cards and how deep the night goes: Keep it light, Open up or Go deeper. Then you pass the phone. Salo, a small card-stock dealer, shuffles and deals. Its name comes from kasalo, the one who shares your table and listens.

420 cards across all 7 decks are free for good, with Question of the Day, favorites, notes and saved sessions. Premium adds 780 more cards, Collections, 8 Themes, 11 card skins, the Card Maker and iPhone widgets. It comes weekly, monthly or yearly, or you pay once for life.

Your conversations stay yours

The cards are stored on your phone, so Kumustahan works with no signal. There’s no account to make and no ads, not one.

Your notes, favorites and handmade cards stay on your phone, unless you turn on Cloud backup, which copies them to your own iCloud Drive or Google backup. Salo never records, reads your notes or repeats what it hears. The app sends limited usage and crash reports so bugs get fixed, but it doesn’t send the text of your notes, the names of who’s playing or your answers. The details are in the privacy policy.

Who makes it

Kumustahan is designed and built by JM Degojas, an independent developer. There’s no studio and no ad budget behind it: one person, writing and building for the tables they sit at, and reading every message that comes in.
