Conversation card games in the Philippines, compared fairly

Filipinos have more conversation decks than ever, on TikTok Shop, in bookstores and on our phones. Here is what each one is for, so you can pick the right deck for your table.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

In short

The idea

A disclosure first: we make Kumustahan, so read our take with that in mind. We have tried to describe every deck the way its makers do, and to say plainly when another deck fits a table better than ours.

The short version: if you want a physical gift focused on healing and mental health, look at Comfort Cards. If you want a party game with laughs, Hugot. If you want to interview your parents or grandparents, Parents Are Human. If you want one app that covers every kind of table in English and Filipino, try Kumustahan.

Tips

  1. Match the deck to the people first, then the mood.
  2. A healing-focused deck is not a party game, and a party game is not a heart-to-heart. Pick for tonight.
  3. Whatever the deck, let anyone pass a card.
  4. Physical decks make better gifts; apps carry more cards and go everywhere.

Comfort Cards by Bakás

Bakás describes itself as a Filipino human connection brand, and Comfort Cards are its best-known product: Taglish decks with a question on one side and a validating statement on the other. Editions include the original mental-health decks, Couples, Barkada, Family, Moving On and Small Talks, sold through its own shop and the big marketplaces.

Pick it if you want a physical gift, especially for someone working through a hard season, and you like the Taglish, healing-focused tone.

Toni Talks Meaningful Conversations Cards

A deck of questions from Toni Gonzaga’s long-running interview show, made to bring the show’s kind of conversation home. It is sold through the show’s official online shops.

Pick it if you’re a fan of the show and want its style of question at your own table.

Hugot the Card Game

A Filipino party game in the spirit of fill-in-the-blank card games, built on hugot lines. It is about laughing together more than talking deeply.

Pick it if the goal tonight is noise and laughter, not conversation.

Parents Are Human, Filipino edition

A deck of questions and small actions for talking with your parents or grandparents, with English on one side and Filipino on the other. It is popular with Filipino families abroad.

Pick it if your whole purpose is to hear your parents’ stories. For a free list in the meantime, see our questions to ask your parents.

We’re Not Really Strangers

The American card game that made conversation decks a trend, with three levels that move from first impressions to deeper connection. It is in English and written for Western tables.

Pick it if your group speaks English and you want the original. For a Filipino take, see our We’re Not Really Strangers alternative.

Kumustahan

Our app: 1,200 conversation cards in 7 decks (Getting to know, Just for fun, Reflect, Lifegroup & Faith, Couples, Barkada and Icebreakers), with English and Filipino on every card and a short reflection on the back. You choose how deep the night goes, mix decks, and pass the phone. 420 cards are free for good, it works offline, and it needs no account.

Pick it if you host many kinds of tables, want both languages on the same card, or want to try before you buy. It is not a physical gift, and some people simply prefer paper.
