Playing Icebreakers

How to use this deck

A good icebreaker question has two jobs. Nobody should freeze, and everybody should learn one real thing about someone. Quick choices and what-ifs do the first job. The short story prompts do the second.

Most of the deck is light, so it’s safe with people you met five minutes ago, at work, in a classroom or in a new small group. The few deeper cards only come out when you choose Go deeper.

Good for

  • Team meetings and onboarding
  • Classrooms and orientation week
  • New lifegroups and church events
  • Workshops and retreats, before the first session
  • Family gatherings with in-laws you’re still getting to know

Tips

  1. One card, one round: everyone answers the same question in a sentence. For a group of ten, that’s about five minutes.
  2. At work or school, choose Keep it light in setup. Nobody wants a deep question in their first meeting.
  3. Ask “why?” once. A quick pick becomes a story.
  4. Go first and keep it short. Your answer sets the length for everyone.
  5. Big group? Split into circles of four to six, with one phone per circle.

Conversation depth

Choose how deep tonight goes.

In setup, pick Keep it light, Open up or Go deeper. You can always pass a card.

  1. Keep it light
