How to use them
Before you ask
A good conversation starter does three things. It is specific, so nobody has to think about what you mean. It is easy to answer, so a shy person can still say something. And it invites a story, not a yes or a no. “How are you?” fails all three. A question about the snack you can’t refuse, or the game that kept you busy as a kid, passes every time.
Match the opener to the room. With people you just met, ask about small choices and preferences: they are safe and they show personality fast. With friends, ask for the story behind something you already half know. Save the deeper questions for when the table has warmed up, and never open with them.
The follow-up matters more than the starter. When someone answers, ask one small thing back: what happened next, who was there, would they do it again. Then answer the question yourself. A conversation is a trade, and people relax when you go second and share too.
Every question here has a Filipino version, so you can ask in whichever language the table speaks. Some stories simply come out better in Tagalog, and a lola or a new classmate may answer more easily in the language they think in. For a whole page of openers led in Filipino, see Tagalog conversation starters.
Good for
Tips
- Answer your own question first if people hesitate. It shows the size of answer you mean.
- Ask one follow-up before moving on: “Then what happened?” does most of the work.
- Start light and stay light for a while. Depth comes when people choose it.
- Let anyone pass a question, no explanation needed.
- Mix English and Tagalog. Some stories only sound right in one of them.
- New to playing with cards? How to play takes a minute to read.

Frequently asked questions
What are good conversation starters?
Questions that are specific, easy to answer and invite a story. Ask about small preferences, a funny memory or a recent good moment instead of “how are you” or “what do you do”.
How do you keep a conversation going after the first question?
Ask a small follow-up about what they said, then share your own answer. A conversation keeps going when both people trade stories, not when one person asks and the other answers.
What is a good conversation starter with someone you just met?
Pick something light that anyone can answer in a sentence, like a food they never get tired of or where they would go on a free ticket. Small choices show personality without asking anyone to open up too soon.
Are there conversation starters in Tagalog?
Yes. Every conversation starter on this page has an English and a Filipino/Tagalog version, so each person can read the one they prefer.
Is there an app with conversation starters?
Yes. These come from Kumustahan, a free conversation card app with questions in English and Tagalog. Choose a few decks, pick a depth, and pass the phone around.
