Filipino Christmas traditions, from September to January
The Philippines celebrates one of the longest Christmas seasons in the world. It starts with the first “ber” month, September, and runs until the Feast of the Three Kings in January. Along the way: star lanterns, dawn Masses, a midnight feast and a lot of family.
Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

In short
The idea
If you hear Christmas songs on the radio in a Filipino household on September 1, nobody is confused. The “ber months” (September, October, November, December) are Christmas season, and Jose Mari Chan’s Christmas album playing in malls is as much a sign of it as the first parol in a window.
For Filipinos abroad, many of these traditions travel well and some don’t. The parol and Noche Buena go everywhere; Simbang Gabi happens wherever there is a Filipino parish; the carolers at the gate mostly stay home. Questions for celebrating far away are on a Filipino Christmas abroad.
Tips
- Go to at least one Simbang Gabi, even if you’re not Catholic. Stay for the bibingka.
- Bring a gift for the household when visiting for Noche Buena.
- Ninongs and ninangs: prepare small envelopes; the kids will come.
- Keep the Christmas lights up until Three Kings. That’s tradition, not laziness.
Decks for this
The traditions, in order
- The ber months. Decorations, Christmas music and sales begin in September.
- Parol. The star-shaped lantern, the symbol of a Filipino Christmas, recalling the star of Bethlehem. San Fernando, Pampanga, is famous for its giant lanterns.
- Christmas parties and monito monita. Office, school and barkada parties, many with a gift exchange where each week has a theme (something soft, something sweet) before the final reveal.
- Simbang Gabi. Nine dawn or evening Masses from December 16 to 24. Tradition says completing all nine earns a wish. Afterward: bibingka, puto bumbong and salabat. See Simbang Gabi questions.
- Caroling. Kids and groups go house to house singing, and the household gives coins or treats. “Namamasko po!” is the call at the gate.
- Noche Buena. The Christmas Eve feast, traditionally after the late Mass on the 24th: ham, queso de bola, spaghetti, lechon, fruit salad. See Noche Buena questions.
- Aguinaldo or pamasko. On Christmas Day, children visit their ninong and ninang (godparents) and elders, do the mano, and receive gifts or crisp new bills.
- Media Noche. The New Year’s Eve feast at midnight. Many families set out round fruits for prosperity, wear polka dots, make noise, and jump at midnight so the kids grow taller.
- Three Kings. The Feast of the Epiphany in early January traditionally closes the season.
