How to use them
Before you ask
Family conversations get stuck in the same three questions: school, work, and when are you getting married. A good family question goes around them. It asks about food, home, habits and old stories, things every generation has an answer to.
Start with the easy set while people are still eating. Food rules, sawsawan opinions and who notices the mess first get the whole table answering and arguing. Once people are laughing, move to stories from home. The deeper questions are for later, when it’s down to whoever stayed at the table.
Let the oldest person answer first now and then. A question about childhood lands differently from lola than from a cousin, and the young ones usually want to hear it.

Tips
- Skip anything that sounds like a checkup. No grades, salaries or “kailan ka mag-aasawa”.
- Ask the same card to two generations and compare the answers.
- Let the kids read the cards aloud. They take the job seriously.
- Mix English and Tagalog. Every card has both, so lola and the kids can each read their own.
- Stop while it’s still fun. Three good stories beat twenty quick answers.

Frequently asked questions
What are good questions to ask your family?
Questions about food, home, habits and old stories, because every generation has an answer. Ask about a household food rule, a childhood game, or the funny memory the family still brings up, then let the answers turn into stories.
How do I start a conversation at a family dinner?
Begin with a light question everyone can answer in a sentence, like a favorite ulam or a sawsawan opinion, and answer it yourself first. After a few rounds, ask for a story instead of an opinion.
Are these family questions available in Tagalog?
Yes. Every question on this page has an English and a Filipino/Tagalog version, so each person at the table can read the one they prefer.
Can we play these on a phone?
