What is kwentuhan?

Kwentuhan (standard spelling kuwentuhan) is a long, relaxed session of swapping stories. It comes from kuwento, “story”. In English the closest words are “a long chat”, “trading stories” or, in Hawaii, “talk story”.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

In short

The idea

A kwentuhan doesn’t have an agenda. It is what happens when Filipinos sit together with no rush: after a meal, on a long drive, on the porch during a brownout. One person tells a story, someone tops it, someone else remembers a related one, and two hours disappear.

The suffix -han makes a word something people do together, back and forth. Kuwento (a story, from the Spanish cuento) becomes kuwentuhan, story-swapping, the same way kumusta becomes kumustahan and tawa (laugh) becomes tawanan (laughing together).

Tips

  1. Ask for a specific story: a time, a place, a person.
  2. Tell one yourself first, short and a little embarrassing.
  3. Say “tapos?” instead of jumping to your own story.
  4. Don’t check the time. A kwentuhan ends when it ends.

How to use it

Some everyday sentences:

  • “Kwentuhan tayo mamaya.” Let’s catch up and chat later.
  • “Napasarap ang kwentuhan.” The conversation got so good (we lost track of time).
  • “Kuwentuhan mo naman ako.” Tell me what’s been happening.
  • “Magkuwento ka!” Tell a story! / Spill!
  • “Mahabang kuwento.” Long story.

How to start a kwentuhan

Ask for a story, not an opinion. “What do you think about…?” gets a sentence. “Tell me about a time…” gets a kwentuhan. Start with something small and funny, a near-miss or an embarrassing moment, because the first laugh gives everyone else permission to share theirs.

Then follow up. The magic words of a kwentuhan are “Tapos?” (and then?) and “Weh? Talaga?” (no way, really?). For more on drawing stories out, see follow-up questions.

Questions that start a kwentuhan

Every good kwentuhan starts with one story that makes someone say “ay, ako rin!” (me too!). These cards ask for exactly that kind of story, in English and Filipino.

Small, funny ones

5 questions

Mishaps and near-panics: the stories that get the first laugh.

  1. Finish this: I almost panicked when I accidentally sent...

Tapusin ito: Halos nag-panic ako nung accidentally kong na-send...

    Back of the card

Wrong sends create instant suspense. The few seconds after realizing it can feel longer than the whole day.

Iba yung kaba ng wrong send. Yung ilang seconds after ma-realize, parang humahaba bigla yung buong araw.

  2. What funny experience made you late to meet a friend?

    Back of the card

Retell the delay as a very dramatic excuse, if you like.

  3. Recall a harmless mistake that became a good story later.

    Back of the card

What would the title of this story be?

Ano ang magiging pamagat ng kuwentong ito?

  4. Describe a moment that stressed you out before but makes you laugh now.

    Back of the card

Some stressful moments lose their sharp edges with time. Once the panic fades, the story sometimes becomes surprisingly funny.

  5. Tell a funny story about overreacting to a tiny problem.

    Back of the card

How would you tell it if the tiny problem were the villain in the story?

Stories with a place in them

5 questions

A ride home, a meal, a place that stayed with you.

  1. Tell us about a place that left a memory or feeling you still carry.

    Back of the card

Some places stay with us quietly. You may not notice it right away, but later you realize you carried something from there.

  2. Name a place that reminds you of a funny story with friends.

    Back of the card

That place gets a new name just for this story. What would it be?

  3. When was the last time a meal became a good memory?

Kailan huling naging magandang memory yung isang meal?

    Back of the card

A good meal memory is rarely only about food. It can be the timing, the people, or the feeling around the table.

  4. Tell about a ride home with friends that you still remember.

    Back of the card

You could remember just the last thing someone said before you parted.

Puwedeng balikan ang huling sinabi bago kayo naghiwa-hiwalay.

  5. What meal with a friend became memorable for something besides the food?

    Back of the card

If this meal's story had a title, what would it be?

The ones that take a while

5 questions

For late in the kwentuhan, when nobody is checking the time.

  1. Tell us about a small childhood memory you still remember clearly.

    Back of the card

The memories that stay are not always the biggest ones. Sometimes one small scene keeps its color for years.

  2. From when you were younger, what habit or interest do you still carry now?

    Back of the card

Some parts of us do not disappear; they just grow up with us. It can be nice to notice what stayed.

  3. Share the first time you did something on your own and felt more capable afterward.

    Back of the card

Finish if you like: "That was when I realized I could..."

  4. Tell us about a friend who made you feel like you belonged.

    Back of the card

Inclusion can happen through one seat saved, one question asked, or one person making room on purpose.

  5. Tell us about something you used to avoid that feels less scary now.

    Back of the card

Less scary is still movement. You do not have to be fearless to know something has changed.
