What does hugot mean?

Hugot literally means “to pull out” or “to draw out”. As Filipino slang, a hugot is a line or feeling pulled from somewhere deep, usually heartbreak, longing or regret, and often said half-jokingly. A hugot line is a sentence that sounds casual but clearly comes from experience.

In short

The idea

In everyday Tagalog, you hugot a sword from its sheath or a card from a deck. The slang meaning took off in Filipino pop culture in the 2010s, through romantic movies, TV, memes and ads full of lines about moving on, waiting and being left on seen. A hugot line works because it is about something ordinary (coffee, traffic, a group project) while obviously being about a heart.

Hugot isn’t only about romance. People hugot about work, school, family, being the dependable one. The common thread is that the feeling is real, even when the line is a joke.

Tips

  1. Tease a hugot gently. Behind the joke is usually something real.
  2. If a friend’s hugot sounds heavy, ask one quiet question later.
  3. Keep the deep-end cards for one-on-one, not a party.

How Filipinos use it

  • “Ang hugot mo!” That was so deep / that came from somewhere! (teasing)
  • “Saan ka humuhugot?” Where is that coming from? (Usually followed by laughter.)
  • “May pinaghuhugutan.” There’s something behind it; they’re speaking from experience.
  • “Hugot lines”: the genre of witty, heartbroken one-liners.
  • “Humugot siya ng lakas ng loob.” He mustered his courage (the literal sense, still in use).

Hugot in English

There’s no single English word. Depending on the sentence, a hugot is “a deep cut”, “speaking from experience”, “a little too real” or “feeling some type of way”. The teasing “ang hugot!” is close to “oof, that’s personal.”
