How to use them

Before you ask

Would you rather questions are the easiest way to get a group talking, because nobody has to come up with an answer from scratch. You only have to choose. The conversation starts with the defense: why the window seat, why breakfast over dessert, why you would rather know the traffic than the weather.

The good ones are hard because both options are nice, not because both are gross. Every card here is a clean choice between two things people actually want, so they work in a classroom, a team meeting or a family table with the kids listening.

Play it fast. Read the two options, count to three, and have everyone say their pick at once. Then ask the outnumbered side to make their case. If the group wants more open-ended imagination after a round, move on to what if questions or the Icebreakers deck.

Good for

  • Classrooms and the first day of school
  • Team huddles and online meetings
  • Family dinners with kids at the table
  • Road trips and long lines
  • Youth groups and camps

Tips

  1. Have everyone answer at the same time so nobody just copies the first person.
  2. Ask the side with fewer votes to defend their pick. That’s where the fun is.
  3. Allow one “neither” per person per game. Not more.
  4. Follow up with “when did you last choose that?” to turn a pick into a story.
  5. Keep the options kind. A good would you rather never makes fun of anyone.
