How to use them

Before you ask

A what if question takes the pressure off. Nobody has to talk about their actual job or their actual problems. They only have to imagine. And what people imagine, the power they’d pick, the room they’d add, the holiday they’d invent, tells you more about them than most direct questions do.

Start with the quick ones while people are still settling in. The dream-day questions work well on road trips, at sleepovers and around a table after dinner. The world-building ones are good for groups, because people start adding to each other’s answers.

The last few are hypotheticals about you: your younger self, your future self, what you’d try if failing felt less embarrassing. Save them for a smaller table. For either-or questions, see would you rather questions.

Good for

  • Road trips and long jeep or bus rides
  • Sleepovers and late nights
  • Classroom and team icebreakers
  • Kids and teens at family gatherings
  • Group chats on a slow day

Tips

  1. Ask “why” after every answer. That’s where the good part is.
  2. Let people build on each other’s worlds instead of taking turns strictly.
  3. Answer yourself first with something a little ridiculous.
  4. Mix a few real questions in once the table is laughing.
  5. Anyone can pass, even on the silly ones.

What if questions

Frequently asked questions

What are good what if questions to ask?

Questions with a small, specific setup: a tiny superpower for daily errands, a free round-trip ticket, a holiday everyone celebrates, a day as any animal. Ask why after each answer.

What is the difference between what if and would you rather questions?

A would you rather question gives two options to pick from. A what if question sets up a scenario and leaves the answer open, so people invent their own.

Are hypothetical questions good icebreakers?

Yes, because nobody has to share anything personal to answer them, and the answers still show what people value. They work for classrooms, teams and groups that just met.

Can I play these in Tagalog?

Yes. Every question here has an English and a Filipino version. They come from the Icebreakers and Just for fun decks in the free Kumustahan app.
