How to use them
Before you ask
“If you could” is the oldest conversation game there is, and it lasts because it gives everyone permission to want things out loud. A power, a trip, a shop you’d open for fun: none of it is real, so nobody is embarrassed, and the answers still show what someone cares about.
The mistake is stopping at the first answer. Flying is a fine choice; where you’d fly on a normal weekday is the interesting part. So follow every answer with a practical question: what would you do with it first, who would you take, what would it change about your week?
The last group turns the game around. Instead of magic, it asks what you’d tell your younger self or what would make next month lighter. It’s a gentle way to end, and it works with kids at bedtime as well as with friends at the end of a long dinner.
Good for
Tips
- Ask the practical follow-up: what would you do with it first?
- Let kids answer first. Adults copy less and laugh more.
- Allow one change of answer per person per game.
- Save the closer-to-home wishes for the end.
- Keep a list of the funniest answers in your phone for next time.

If you could questions
Frequently asked questions
What are some good if you could questions?
Questions about a power you’d want, a place you’d go for free, something you’d make, or one small wish for this year. Start playful, then end with one that is closer to real life.
Are these if you could questions good for kids?
Yes. Most are simple enough for young kids and still fun for adults, which makes them good for family dinners and car rides. The last round is a little more reflective, so read the room.
How do I keep the game from fizzling out?
Ask a follow-up after each answer, like why that one or what would happen next. The first answer is the setup; the follow-up is where the conversation happens.
