How to use them

Before you ask

ESL questions for kids should be about imagining, choosing and playing, because children speak most when the question feels like a game rather than a test.

Young learners often know more English than they show. What stops them is the fear of a wrong answer. Make-believe questions have no wrong answers: any animal, any toy, any silly rule is correct. That frees them to try the words.

With the youngest children, read the card aloud, show your own answer with a gesture, then go around the circle. With older kids, put them in pairs and give each pair a card to “interview” each other, then let them draw their answer and present it in one sentence.

Good for

  • Primary school English lessons
  • Kids’ online English classes
  • English camps and after-school clubs
  • Parents practicing English at home
  • Circle time warm-ups

Tips

  1. Model every card with your own silly answer first; kids copy the shape of what you say.
  2. Add drawing: answer, draw it, then say one sentence about the picture.
  3. Keep it to five or six cards per session. Short and fun beats long and tired.
  4. Clap for full sentences, not perfect ones.
  5. Use the “Adventure time” cards as a story starter for older kids’ writing.

Frequently asked questions

What questions can I ask kids learning English?

Simple choices and make-believe questions: which animal they would understand, what new holiday they would invent, which toy they would make giant. They are easy, fun and have no wrong answer.

How do I get shy children to speak English?

Let them point or draw first, then say one word, then a sentence. Pairs and small circles feel safer than speaking to the whole class.

What age are these questions for?

Most suit children from about six to twelve. The adventure questions work best with older children who can give longer answers.
