How to use them

Before you ask

The questions kids answer best are specific, a bit playful and impossible to get wrong. “How was your day?” fails because it asks a seven-year-old to summarize six hours. “What would you sell in a tiny shop?” works because there’s a picture in it.

Start with the easy openers and the what-ifs; they warm kids up the way small talk warms up adults. Once they’re chatting, slip in a question about friends or about something they’re proud of. You’ll often hear more about their day sideways than you would by asking about it straight.

Answer the questions yourself too. Kids love hearing a grown-up’s silly answer, and it shows them the game is a swap, not a test. If they pass on one, let it go and pick another card.

Good for

  • Dinner, breakfast and snack time
  • Car rides and waiting rooms
  • Bedtime wind-down
  • Playdates and sleepovers
  • Grandparents, aunts and babysitters who want an easy way in

Tips

  1. Ask one question, then follow their answer instead of reading the next card.
  2. Give your own answer first when a kid looks stuck. It shows the shape of an answer.
  3. Let them ask you a card, too. Kids ask better follow-ups than most adults.
  4. Swap a big word for a smaller one when you read aloud; keep the idea the same.
  5. Stop while they still want one more. That’s how it becomes a habit they ask for.

Questions for kids

Frequently asked questions

What are good questions to ask kids?

Specific, playful questions with no wrong answer: what they’d sell in a tiny shop, which superpower they’d lend a friend, what makes a game fun even when nobody wins. Then follow whatever they say with “and then what?”

How do I get my kid to answer more than “fine”?

Ask about something smaller than the whole day, ask while you’re doing something side by side, and answer the question yourself too. Imaginative questions often lead kids back to real things that happened.

What age are these questions for?

Roughly five to twelve. For younger kids see the kindergarten questions; for ten to twelve, the tween questions go further into friends and school.

Can kids play these on a phone?

Yes. They come from Kumustahan, a free conversation card app. Pick Just for fun or Icebreakers, choose Keep it light, and let your kid tap to flip the card.
