    Back of the card

Parang kusa siyang nagiging comedy pag binalikan.

  3. Tell us about a small thing you can do now that would have amazed you as a kid.

Appreciation round

4 questions

Recognition from colleagues, not just from leadership.

  1. Which small kindness from other people do you notice right away?

    Back of the card

It could be someone checking in, saving you a seat, helping quietly, or remembering a small detail. The kindness you notice may be the kind you needed before.

  2. Tell us about a time someone was fair to you in a way you still remember.

    Back of the card

Fairness can be memorable because it gives people room to breathe. It says, I see the whole situation, not only the mistake.

  3. Which compliment have you remembered long after someone said it?

    Back of the card

The exact words are optional. Notice which part of the compliment stayed with you.

  4. Who is someone you respect for the way they live, even in small things?

    Back of the card

Respect often begins with small, steady things. A simple habit can show a lot about how someone moves through life.

Start of the term or year

  1. What would you like to make more time for this month?

    Back of the card

Imagine an extra afternoon opens up. Would you spend it all on this or leave some time free?

  2. Which small plan are you looking forward to?

Anong small plan ang nilu-look forward mo?

    Back of the card

  3. Pick one value you want to show up in your week.

    Back of the card

How to use them

Before you ask

A staff meeting icebreaker has to work for a big room in very little time. Going around 30 people isn’t an icebreaker; it’s the meeting. Use questions everyone answers at once with a show of hands, or in pairs with whoever is sitting nearby.

All-staff meetings bring together people who rarely overlap: the front desk and the back office, teachers from different grades, the morning and evening shifts. The pair share is the tool for that. Two minutes with a neighbor about a mistake that became a good story does more for a building than a slide of new hires.

Once a term, swap the icebreaker for an appreciation round. Ask a few people to name a kindness they noticed or someone who was fair to them. Recognition from coworkers lands differently from recognition from the principal or the director.

Good for

  • School staff and faculty meetings
  • Hospital and clinic staff huddles
  • Nonprofit all-staff meetings
  • Retail and restaurant pre-shift meetings
  • Back-to-school professional development days

Tips

  1. Read the show-of-hands question twice; the back rows miss it the first time.
  2. Before the pair share, ask people to turn to someone from a different team.
  3. Line up one appreciation in advance so the round doesn’t open with silence.
  4. Five minutes, then the agenda. People respect a meeting that starts on time.

Frequently asked questions

What are good icebreakers for staff meetings?

Quick pick-one questions answered by show of hands, short pair shares with a neighbor, and an occasional appreciation round where colleagues recognize each other. They suit a large room and take five minutes or less.

How do you do an icebreaker with a large staff?

Don’t go around the room. Use a show of hands, or have people answer in pairs for two minutes and invite two or three to share with everyone.

What are good icebreakers for teachers at a staff meeting?

Pair shares about something they can do now that would have amazed their younger self, or a mistake that became a good story. At the start of a year, ask what they want to make more time for this term.
