How to use them
Before you ask
A team check-in question has to be easy to answer honestly in front of coworkers. “How is everyone?” gets a chorus of “good,” and nobody learns that half the team is underwater. A smaller, more specific question, like one part of today that felt okay or one thing that can wait until tomorrow, gets closer to the truth.
Run a one-word round every week; it takes 90 seconds and tells a team lead more than a status report. Every couple of weeks, swap in a workload question. Ask it only if you’re willing to act on the answer. A team that says what can wait and then watches nothing change stops answering.
Now and then, end with shout-outs. Recognition from peers in a regular meeting does more for morale than an annual award, and it gives quieter people an easy way to speak up, about someone else.
Good for
Tips
- Go in a fixed order so nobody has to decide when to jump in.
- Allow a pass. A forced answer is worse than none.
- If an answer worries you, follow up privately after the meeting, never in the round.
- The lead answers last, so the team isn’t matching the boss’s tone.
- Keep a shared note of what people said could wait, and check it next week.

Frequently asked questions
What are good team check-in questions?
Small, specific ones people can answer honestly at work: one part of today that felt okay, a pressure they’ve gotten used to carrying, a small habit that’s helping. End with a shout-out for a teammate.
How do you run a check-in at the start of a team meeting?
Pick one question, go around in a fixed order with answers of a word or a sentence, and allow passes. It should take two or three minutes. Follow up privately on anything concerning.
How is a team check-in different from a one-on-one?
A team check-in is short and public, so the questions stay light and quick. Deeper questions about workload or growth belong in a one-on-one, where someone can answer without an audience.
