How to use them
Before you ask
Remote teams get to know each other through small, specific details, because the hallway moments that do that job in an office never happen. Nobody overhears your weekend plans or notices you always take the window seat. The questions have to do it on purpose.
The common mistake is a weekly “fun question” so generic that people answer in three words and move on. Better questions use what remote people actually share: the room they work from, the message they nearly sent to the wrong channel, the hour of the day that’s easiest in their time zone. Those answers are visible, a little funny, and personal without being private.
Post one in the team channel on Monday and let people answer when they log on, or open the weekly call with one and give everybody 30 seconds. Save the last group for a smaller call; how people end their workday says a lot about how the team is really doing.
Good for
Tips
- Post questions async so every time zone can answer, not just the people awake for the call.
- Encourage photos: the desk, the mug, the view. They do more than a paragraph.
- Rotate who picks the question each week so it isn’t always the manager.
- Keep cameras optional for icebreakers; the answer matters more than the face.
- When someone mentions something real, like a move or a new pet, follow up in a direct message.

Frequently asked questions
What are good questions for remote teams?
Questions about the details remote people share: their desk setup, the sound that reminds them of home, the message they almost sent to the wrong chat, how they wind down after logging off. They’re easy to answer in writing and tell the team something real.
How do remote teams get to know each other?
Through small, regular moments: one question posted async each week, 30-second answers at the start of a call, and photos of where people work. Consistency matters more than a big annual offsite.
Should remote icebreakers be on video or in chat?
Both work. Chat lets every time zone join and suits quieter people; video is better for stories. Many teams post the question in chat and pick two answers to talk about on the call.
