  2. Name a food that tastes better when it's free.

Sabihin mo yung pagkain na mas masarap kapag libre.

    Back of the card

How to use them

Before you ask

The best networking conversation starters ask about what someone enjoys, not what they do. Everyone at a conference has answered the job-title question all day, and the answer has gone flat. Ask which task makes them lose track of time, or which event they’d pick if the ticket were free, and you meet someone who actually sounds like themselves.

What goes wrong at most mixers is the interview: job, company, how long, then silence while both of you scan for the next person. The snack table helps, because food is the one thing everyone in the room has in common. Once you’re talking, a question about a time they changed their mind or someone they respect shows how a person thinks, and that’s what you’ll remember later.

Before you part, ask what they’re looking forward to in the next few weeks. It hands you a real reason to follow up, which is the whole point of networking.

Good for

  • Conference coffee breaks
  • Industry mixers and meetups
  • Career fairs
  • Alumni events
  • Business lunches and chamber events

Tips

  1. Ask, then talk less than half the time.
  2. Join a group of three rather than interrupting a pair.
  3. Note one thing they said when you exchange contacts, and mention it in your follow-up.
  4. When they ask what you do, answer in one sentence and turn a question back.
  5. Leave gracefully: thank them and say what you’re heading to next.

Frequently asked questions

What are good networking conversation starters?

Questions about what people enjoy rather than their title: a task that makes them lose track of time, a project they’d build for their neighborhood, something they tried recently out of curiosity. Then ask a follow-up.

How do you start a conversation at a networking event?

Go where people already stand together, like the coffee or the snack table, and ask a light question about the food or the event. Introduce yourself after the first laugh, not before.

How do you end a networking conversation?

Ask what they’re looking forward to in the coming weeks, exchange contacts if it makes sense, and say thanks. That gives you a natural topic for the follow-up message.
