How to use them

Before you ask

Small talk gets a bad name, but it does a real job: it shows someone you’re friendly before anyone has to share anything. The trouble is the same three topics, weather, traffic and “busy?”, which leave nowhere to go. A slightly better small talk question is still light, but it asks for an opinion or a little story instead of a fact.

Every question here is safe for a coworker, a neighbour or a stranger at a networking event. None of them touch politics, money, health or family plans. They ask about routines, food, weekends and the small annoyances everyone shares, which is exactly what small talk is for.

Use one, listen, and follow the answer. If someone says they always check the stove twice before leaving, ask what happened the time they didn’t. That’s how small talk turns into a real conversation. When you’re ready to go further, read how to get past small talk.

Good for

  • Networking events and conferences
  • The first minutes of a meeting or video call
  • Office kitchens and coffee breaks
  • Neighbours, housemates and building lifts
  • Waiting rooms, queues and shared rides

Tips

  1. Ask for an opinion, not a fact. “Which do you prefer?” beats “how was traffic?”.
  2. Keep away from politics, money, health and family plans with people you barely know.
  3. Give your own answer in a sentence so it doesn’t feel like a survey.
  4. Remember one detail and bring it up next time. That’s how regulars become friends.
  5. Let small talk stay small. Not every chat has to go deep.

Small talk questions

Frequently asked questions

What are good small talk questions?

Light questions that ask for an opinion or a small story, like how someone passes time while waiting, their ideal weekend or a food that is better the next day. They are safe with anyone and more fun than the weather.

What are good small talk topics at work?

Food, weekends, routines, commutes and small everyday annoyances. Avoid salaries, politics, health and personal plans with coworkers you don’t know well yet.

How do you make small talk less awkward?

Have one or two easy questions ready, answer them yourself, and follow up on whatever the other person says. Awkwardness usually comes from not knowing what to say next, and a follow-up solves that.

What do you say at a networking event?

Skip “what do you do” as your first line and ask something lighter, like what kind of task makes them lose track of time or where they would go on a free ticket. Work comes up naturally a few minutes later.
