How to use them
Before you ask
A good question is less about being clever and more about fit. The same question that works over a long coffee feels strange in a work elevator. So this page is sorted by situation instead of topic: pick the room you’re walking into, then pick a question from that list.
What the good ones share is that they’re specific and easy to start answering. Nobody has a ready answer to “tell me about yourself”. Almost everyone has an opinion about what makes a café worth going back to, or which task makes them lose track of time. Specific questions get specific answers, and specific answers are where the conversation starts.
Then do the part most people skip: listen to the answer and ask one thing back about it. A good question opens a door; the follow-up walks through it. If that part feels hard, our guide to follow-up questions has plenty of ways in.
Good for
Tips
- Pick the question for the room, not the one you find most interesting.
- Ask about choices and habits before you ask about feelings.
- Follow every answer with one small question about that answer.
- Share your own answer too, so it feels like a trade and not an interview.
- If someone gives a short answer, let it be. Not every question has to land.

Good questions to ask
Frequently asked questions
What are good questions to ask someone?
Specific, easy questions about their habits, choices and small stories, like what makes a place worth visiting again or what they would do with a free afternoon. They are easier to answer than broad questions and show more about the person.
What is a good question to ask a coworker?
Ask about how they work rather than what they earn or where they are going next. A question about the task that makes them lose track of time, or a habit someone taught them, is friendly without being personal.
How do you make a question sound natural?
Tie it to something already happening, like the food on the table or the trip someone just mentioned, and answer it yourself first if there’s a pause. A question feels natural when it comes from curiosity, not a script.
Where can I find more good questions?
These come from Kumustahan, a free conversation card app with questions in English and Tagalog, each with a short reflection on the back. Pick a few decks and a depth, and the app deals the questions for you.
