How to use them
Before you ask
An interesting question sits in the middle. It is more than “where are you from” and less than “what are you most afraid of”. It gives people something to think about without asking them to reveal anything hard, which is why it works at a dinner party, on a long drive or with a friend you know well but rarely talk to like this.
The thought experiments are the easiest place to start. Pausing time, keeping old photos or old messages, a day from the past you would like to watch: the choice is fun, but the reason behind it is where the interesting answer lives. Always ask why.
From there, move to questions about what people notice and how they change their minds. These are interesting because nobody has been asked them before, so the answers come out fresh. Keep the mood curious rather than serious. If the table wants to go further, the deep questions are the next step.
Good for
Tips
- Ask “why?” after every answer. That’s where the interesting part is.
- Give people a few seconds to think. A good question deserves a pause.
- Answer the question yourself, especially if your answer is odd.
- Disagree kindly. Two different answers make the best conversation.
- Mix one thought experiment with one personal question to keep it moving.

Frequently asked questions
What are some interesting questions to ask?
Thought experiments with a real choice in them, questions about what someone notices first, and questions about when they last changed their mind. They make people think without asking them to share anything heavy.
What is the difference between interesting questions and deep questions?
Interesting questions make people think; deep questions ask them to open up. An interesting question is safe for almost any table, while a deep one needs trust and the right moment.
How do you ask thought-provoking questions without being awkward?
Ask lightly, as if it just occurred to you, and give your own answer too. Thought-provoking questions feel awkward only when they sound like a test.
Are these questions available in other languages?
Every question on this page has an English and a Filipino/Tagalog version, so a bilingual group can read whichever feels natural.
