How to use them

Before you ask

The hardest dinner to host is the one where guests only half know each other. They have you in common and not much else, so the talk drifts to traffic, work and the weather. A good dinner table question gives them something better to share, and food is the easiest door in.

Start while the dishes are still being passed. Questions about favorite ulam, strange food combos and leftovers that taste better the next day get the whole table answering and teasing. By the main course, ask for stories about meals and people. Keep the more personal questions for after dessert, when the table is smaller and nobody is checking the time.

As the host, answer first. It shows the length and tone you want, and it takes the pressure off the guest who doesn’t know anyone. Skip the job interview questions. Nobody came to dinner to explain their career.

Good for

  • Dinner parties with mixed groups
  • Sunday lunch with new in-laws or partners
  • Housewarming handaan
  • Small get-togethers at a restaurant
  • Despedida and welcome-home dinners

Tips

  1. Answer the first question yourself, briefly, so guests know how long an answer can be.
  2. Ask one question to the whole table, not one guest at a time. It feels less like an interview.
  3. Leave the phone in the middle of the table and let whoever finishes a story draw the next card.
  4. You can always pass a card. Say it out loud once so the shy guest hears it.
  5. Mix in the icebreakers if the table is quiet, and drop them once people are laughing.

Dinner table

Frequently asked questions

What are good dinner table conversation starters?

Questions about food, small preferences and stories everyone has, like a meal that became a memory or a food rule from home. They are easy to answer, they get people teasing each other, and they work even when guests barely know each other.

How do you get dinner guests who don’t know each other talking?

Ask one light question to the whole table and answer it yourself first. Food opinions work well, because everyone has one and the answers start friendly arguments between strangers.

What should you avoid asking at a dinner party?

Salaries, weight, politics with people you just met, and anything that sounds like a checkup, such as when someone is getting married. Ask for stories and opinions instead of facts about someone’s life.

Are these dinner party questions available in Tagalog?

Yes. Every card has an English and a Filipino/Tagalog version, so mixed tables can read in the language they prefer. They come from the free Kumustahan app, which works offline at any table.
