How to handle awkward silence (and when not to)
A conversation going quiet is the most normal thing in the world. It only gets awkward when everyone scrambles to fix it.
Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.
After the main plan ends, which part of the hangout do you enjoy most?
After ng main plan, which part ng hangout ang pinaka-enjoy mo?
The after-plan part can become the real memory. Looser moments sometimes carry the easiest stories.
Minsan yung after ng main plan ang nagiging totoong memory. Mas loose kasi, kaya mas madaling magka-kwento.
In short
The idea
To handle an awkward silence, first let it be for a few seconds; most pauses end on their own. If it lasts, go back to something the other person said earlier, ask an easy question about the moment you’re in, or offer a small story of your own.
Keep a couple of light questions in your pocket for real stalls. And remember that silence between people who are comfortable with each other isn’t a problem to solve. Sometimes the quiet is the good part.
Tips
- Let a pause last three or four seconds before you fill it.
- Go back to something they said earlier; it shows you listened.
- Keep one or two light hypotheticals ready for real stalls.
- In a group, pull in the quietest person with an easy question.
- Among close friends, let comfortable quiet be.

Why silences feel awkward
A pause in conversation lasts a few seconds, but it feels longer because everyone is reading it. Did I say something wrong? Are they bored? Is it my turn? One study found that a silence of just four seconds was enough to make people feel less connected to the group. The silence itself is harmless. The worry about it is what makes it awkward. And you notice your own pauses far more than anyone else does.
Knowing that helps. The other person is probably feeling the same small panic you are, so you can be the one who stays relaxed. That alone makes the pause shorter.
First, wait
Most silences end on their own if nobody panics. The other person may be thinking, chewing, or deciding whether to say something more personal. Give it three or four seconds. Take a sip of your drink. Smile. Often they’ll pick the thread back up, and what people say after a pause is usually more interesting than what they said before it.
This is especially true after a real question. If you’ve just asked something that needs thought, the silence means they’re taking it seriously. Don’t rescue them with an easier question.
If you tend to rush in, try holding a pause on purpose once or twice in your next conversation. You’ll notice how often the other person fills it, usually with something good.
Five ways to restart
If the quiet really has stalled, any of these will get things moving again without feeling forced:
- Go back. “Wait, earlier you said you used to live in Lisbon. How long were you there?” Returning to their topic shows you were listening.
- Notice the moment. The food, the music, the view, the dog under the table. Shared context is always available.
- Offer a small story. “Something strange happened on my way here.” Stories invite stories.
- Ask a light hypothetical. A would-you-rather or a silly what-if lowers the stakes for everyone.
- Name it, kindly. “And that’s the end of my material.” A little humor about the pause takes the pressure off it.
In a group
Group silences are different: everyone assumes someone else will speak. If you’re hosting, plan for the lull, which usually comes after the food and before anyone wants to leave. Pull in the quietest person with an easy question, or start something everyone can join. Games and food help for the same reason: they give people something to do with their hands and eyes while the conversation finds its feet.
That lull is exactly where conversation cards earn their place. Kumustahan deals a question, one person answers, and the next card goes to the next person, so nobody has to carry the conversation. For a group that doesn’t know each other well, start with the Icebreakers or Just for fun decks. Every card works in English, with a Tagalog version on the same card.
On calls and video
Silence feels longer on a call, because you lose the small signals (a smile, a sip, someone looking out the window) that make a pause feel shared. Lag makes it worse: two people start talking at once, both stop, and suddenly nobody wants to go first.
Two habits help. Say a little more than you would in person, so the other person has something to pick up. And name the lag kindly (“You go first, I keep talking over you”) instead of pretending it isn’t happening. For family or friends far away, having one question ready before you dial makes the whole call easier.
When the quiet is fine
Not all silence needs fixing. With close friends, family or a partner, comfortable quiet is a sign of trust: a long drive with nobody talking, two people reading on the same couch, friends sitting together at the end of a long night without needing to say anything. Filling every gap can actually feel more distant. Filipinos call that kind of easy, aimless hanging out tambay, and nobody expects it to be full of talk.
A good test: is anyone uncomfortable? If the other person seems relaxed, let it be. If they’re glancing at their phone or the door, that’s your cue to restart, or to let the conversation end kindly. Ending well is a skill too. “This was really nice, let’s do it again” beats ten more minutes of forcing it.

How to handle awkward silence
Frequently asked questions
What do you say when there is an awkward silence?
Go back to something the other person mentioned earlier, comment on what’s around you, or ask a light, easy question. “Wait, tell me more about…” restarts things without making the pause a big deal.
How do you avoid awkward silences?
You can’t avoid them entirely, and you don’t need to. Asking open questions and following up on answers makes them rarer, and staying relaxed when they happen makes them shorter.
Is silence in a conversation a bad sign?
No. Short pauses are normal and often mean someone is thinking. Between people who are close, comfortable silence is a sign of trust.
How long before a silence feels awkward?
Research suggests a pause starts to feel uncomfortable after about four seconds, even when nothing is wrong. Waiting it out calmly usually lets the other person carry on.
