How to keep a conversation going on a date without interviewing them
First-date talk dies in one of two ways: a job interview or a silence. Here is what to talk about instead, and how to keep it going when it stalls.
Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.
When you try a place to eat, what makes it feel worth visiting again?
Kapag may tinry kang kainan, ano yung nagpapaisip sa'yo na worth balikan ito?
It could be taste, comfort, price, people, or memory. Places become favorites for different reasons.
Puwedeng lasa, comfort, presyo, tao, o memory. Iba-iba yung dahilan kung bakit may places tayong binabalikan.
In short
The idea
Ask open, specific questions about things people enjoy talking about, like places, food, small obsessions and how they spend a free afternoon. Then follow up on what they say, share something of your own, and let the conversation wander instead of moving to the next question on a list.
Skip exes, salaries and big life plans on a first date. Light questions with a story behind them show far more of a person than serious ones, and they keep the evening fun.
Good for
Tips
- Ask about places, food and free time before anything serious.
- Follow up on what they said before asking something new.
- Share something of your own after every couple of questions.
- Treat a short answer as a pass, not a challenge.
- Leave exes, salaries and big plans for later dates.
Decks for this
It’s a conversation, not an interview
The most common first-date mistake is the question list: where are you from, what do you do, do you have siblings, next. Each question gets a fact, and facts don’t lead anywhere. By dessert you know their résumé and nothing about them.
A good date conversation goes back and forth. They answer, you react, you share something related, they ask you something. Aim for roughly half talking and half listening. If you notice you’ve asked three questions in a row without saying anything about yourself, it’s your turn.
What to talk about on a first date
Choose topics people light up about, that have no wrong answer and that come with stories attached.
- Places: “What’s a place you’d take a visitor to show them the real city?”
- Food: “What’s the meal you’d cross town for?”
- Free time: “What does a perfect do-nothing Sunday look like for you?”
- Small obsessions: “What are you weirdly into right now?”
- Light hypotheticals: “If you could get really good at one thing overnight, what would it be?”
Follow up, and share back
The question you open with matters less than the one you ask next. When they mention something, pull on that thread: “How did you get into that?”, “What was the best part?”, “Would you do it again?” A follow-up shows you were listening, and it is how a two-line answer becomes a story.
Listen for the word they say with energy: a trip, a sibling, a hobby they mention twice. That is where the good conversation is. Our guide to follow-up questions has more.
A date where one person asks every question feels like a survey, even if the questions are good. After they answer, give a short answer of your own to the same question. It shows you’re willing to be known too, and it gives them something to ask about.
Match their depth. If they share something a little personal, you can go a step further too. If they keep things light, stay light. Going much deeper than the other person on a first date tends to make them pull back, and going much shallower can feel like a door closing.
When it stalls
Every date has a pause. A few seconds of quiet while you both eat is normal, not a failure. If it stretches, don’t panic-ask something heavy. Go back to something they said earlier (“You mentioned you used to dance, what kind?”), comment on what’s in front of you, or offer a light either-or question that is fun to argue about.
Playing a question game can help too, especially on a second or third date. Say it out loud, “Want to play a question game?”, so it feels like a shared bit, not a tactic. Kumustahan’s Icebreakers and Getting to know decks, set to Keep it light, work well for this; pass the phone and take turns. Skip the Couples deck until you’re actually a couple.
Second and third dates
By the second date, the easy topics are used up, and that’s good news: you can build on what you already know. Bring back something from the first date (“Did you ever book that trip?”), and move from preferences to stories, like how they got into their work, a friend who shaped them, a time they surprised themselves.
Video dates need a bit more structure, because you can’t fall back on the food or the room around you. A question game helps most here. So does asking about what’s behind them on the screen.
What to skip, for now
Exes, money, politics as a test, how many kids they want and anything that feels like screening. Those matter, and they will come up, but on a first date they turn a conversation into an evaluation. If the other person brings something up, it’s fine to talk about it; just don’t lead with it.
And don’t dig. If they give a short answer to a personal question, take it as a pass and move on to something lighter.
None of this means a first date must stay shallow. If the conversation goes somewhere real on its own, follow it. The point is not to force depth, because depth that arrives on its own feels like chemistry, and depth that is forced feels like an interview.

How to keep a conversation going on a date
Frequently asked questions
What should you talk about on a first date?
Light topics with stories behind them: places you love, food, how you spend a free day, things you’re into right now and fun hypotheticals. Leave exes, money and long-term plans for later dates.
How do you keep a conversation going on a date?
Ask open questions, then follow up on the answer instead of switching topics. Share something of your own in return, and when it stalls, go back to something they mentioned earlier.
Is a short silence on a date bad?
No. A few seconds of quiet is normal and often comfortable. Only fill it if it stretches, and fill it with something light rather than a heavy question.
Is it weird to use question cards on a date?
Not if you suggest it openly as a game. Light icebreaker and getting-to-know cards work well on early dates; save couples questions for when you are actually together.
