A note

Being known can feel ordinary like that. Someone remembers your usual, your no-thanks, or the thing you always reach for.

Minsan ganun kasimple yung feeling na kilala ka. May nakakaalala ng usual mo, ayaw mo, o lagi mong pinipili.

How to use them

Before you ask

Kids struggle with “what are you thankful for?” because it’s too big. Ask something they can picture instead: who always knows what they like, a skill someone patiently taught them, something they did recently that they’re proud of. Those are thankful questions in a shape a seven-year-old can answer.

Thanksgiving is also a lot of waiting. The turkey has to rest, the gravy isn’t ready, an aunt is still parking. A few food picks and silly what-ifs during that half hour save everyone, and they keep the kids’ table talking long after the adults have stopped checking on it.

Let kids ask the grown-ups, too. A grandparent explaining which holiday they’d invent is often the best moment of the meal.

Good for

  • The kids’ table at Thanksgiving
  • Family Thanksgiving with young children
  • Classroom Thanksgiving circle time
  • The drive to Grandma’s house
  • The lull between dinner and pie

Tips

  1. Give the kids’ table its own stack of cards and a “question captain” to read them.
  2. Swap “what are you thankful for” for a question about one specific person or skill.
  3. Let younger kids draw their answer on a paper placemat if talking feels like a lot.
  4. Answer first yourself, especially with shy kids. It shows how short an answer can be.
  5. Stop after a few rounds. Kids would rather end on a laugh than a quiz.

Thanksgiving for kids

Frequently asked questions

What are good Thanksgiving questions for kids?

Questions with concrete answers: a food they’d eat even when full, a skill someone taught them, a holiday they’d invent. Kids answer those quickly, and they lead to thankfulness without a speech.

How do you teach kids gratitude at Thanksgiving?

Make it specific. Ask who always knows what they like, or who taught them something useful. Naming one person and one thing is easier for a child, and it means more to the person they name.

What can kids do while waiting for Thanksgiving dinner?

Run a round of quick would-you-rather questions and silly what-ifs. They need no supplies, and they keep hungry kids out of the kitchen for a while.
