A note

Helpful habits are not always dramatic. Sometimes you only notice them when life feels a little easier because they are there.

Hindi laging dramatic ang helpful habits. Minsan mo lang sila napapansin kapag mas gumagaan ang life dahil nandiyan sila.

  3. Describe your favorite quiet moment at home in one sentence.

Yung tahimik sa bahay, treat din minsan. Minsan best part na yung walang kailangang mangyari.

How to use them

Before you ask

Summer break questions do two jobs: they fill the long afternoons, and they give kids a chance to talk about the school year once the pressure is off. In June, a child will often tell you more about the hard parts of the year than they did while it was happening.

Start in the first week, with the summer plan. Ask what activity they’d like to introduce their friends to, what they’d build or fix in the neighborhood, how they’d spend one free hour with friends. Their answers can shape a better summer than a calendar full of camps.

Then keep a few silly questions ready for the day boredom hits. It always does, usually around the second week. A ridiculous what-if, like which household chore should finish itself, can turn “I’m bored” into an afternoon project.

Good for

  • Kids home for summer vacation
  • Teens with long free afternoons
  • Babysitters and summer nannies
  • Summer camp downtime
  • Family evenings on the porch

Tips

  1. Ask the summer-plan questions in the first week and write the answers on the fridge.
  2. Keep a “bored jar” of silly questions for the afternoon crash.
  3. Ask the school-year questions casually, not as a report card.
  4. Answer them yourself. Kids love hearing what adults would invent.
  5. Let summer evenings be slow. One question on the porch is enough.

Summer break

Frequently asked questions

What should I ask my kids at the start of summer break?

Ask what they would love to try, teach a friend or build this summer, and what they are proud of from the school year. Their answers make a better summer plan than a full calendar.

What can kids do when they’re bored in summer?

Play a round of silly what-if questions, then turn one answer into a project: draw the invention, build the shop, plan the neighborhood idea. Questions are a quick cure for “there’s nothing to do”.

Are these summer questions okay for teenagers?

Most are. The school-year and summer-evening questions work well with teens, and the silly ones are fun for younger siblings.
