How to use them

Before you ask

Questions about happiness work best when they’re small. Most people find “what makes you happy?” impossible to answer well, because happiness doesn’t happen in general. It happens in a specific drink, a free afternoon, the part of a hangout after the main plan ends.

This page goes looking for those moments. The first group is about ordinary days and the small things that improve them. The second asks what you do with time that belongs to you. The third is about other people, since most happy moments have someone else in them. The last is a little more reflective: a treat you’re learning to enjoy without guilt, a celebration designed just for you.

Listen for patterns. If someone’s answers keep coming back to being outdoors, or to cooking for friends, you’ve learned what makes them happy without asking the big question. Then do something about it, like planning the free Saturday they described.

Good for

  • Friends catching up
  • Couples planning more good days
  • Kids and teens at dinner
  • Wellness and support groups
  • A birthday conversation

Tips

  1. Keep it small. Ask about a moment, not a life.
  2. Listen for the pattern across answers.
  3. Turn one answer into a plan this week.
  4. Share your own small joys. They’re contagious.
  5. If someone is having a hard time, ask about one small thing, not happiness in general.

Questions about happiness

Frequently asked questions

What are good questions to ask about happiness?

Small, specific ones: a simple thing that makes your day better, how you’d spend a suddenly free afternoon, who you enjoy eating with, how you’d design a celebration just for you. They get honest answers that big questions don’t.

How do you find out what makes someone happy?

Ask about their small daily joys and their free time, then listen for the pattern. What they mention again and again is usually the answer.

Are happiness questions okay to ask someone who is struggling?

Gently, yes, if you keep them small, like one part of the day they look forward to. Avoid asking whether they’re happy in general, which can feel like pressure.
