How to use them
Before you ask
Winter questions are made for the long dark evenings, when everyone is home earlier and there’s time to actually talk. They start with rest, since winter is a season for it, and drift toward the holidays and the end of the year, when reflection comes naturally.
The holiday group works for any tradition, or none: meals that became memories, a household food rule, a new holiday you’d invent for everyone. The year-in-review group is good from late December into January, at a New Year’s Eve table or during a slow first week back. The last group looks forward, gently, without resolutions.
Pair them with a snow day, a holiday visit home, a winter cabin trip or a video call with family far away. For the holidays themselves, see Christmas dinner questions and New Year questions.
Good for
Tips
- Start with rest. It suits the season.
- Save the year-in-review questions for late December.
- Ask everyone for one memory from a holiday meal.
- Keep the hopes small. They’re easier to keep.
- Light a candle or a fire. Winter questions like low light.
