How to use them
Before you ask
Intermediate ESL questions should be easy to understand but hard to answer briefly: a reason, a story or a comparison forces students out of the one-sentence comfort zone that B1 learners tend to settle into.
This is the plateau level. Students can get by, so they stop stretching. They answer “Yes, I like it” and wait. Questions about a mistake that became funny, a habit that only made sense later, or a choice between two imperfect options give them a reason to use the grammar they’ve studied: used to, the present perfect, conditionals, linking words.
Each group lines up with one grammar point, so you can drop a group into the speaking section of that week’s lesson. Ask pairs to aim for “three sentences minimum” per card, and give a point for every linking word they use.
Good for
Tips
- Set a minimum: three sentences per answer, one of them with “because”.
- Ask partners to retell each other’s story to the class in the third person.
- Record one round on a phone and let students listen back for one mistake each.
- Teach two or three time markers (“a few years ago”, “these days”) before the then-and-now group.
- When a student answers well, ask “What happened after that?” instead of moving on.

Frequently asked questions
What are good conversation questions for intermediate ESL students?
Questions that need more than one sentence: a choice with a reason, a short story from the past, or how something has changed over time. They should use familiar words so the challenge is the speaking, not the vocabulary.
How do I get intermediate students to give longer answers?
Set a minimum length, model a three-sentence answer, and ask one follow-up question every time. Linking words on the board help a lot.
Can I use these questions to practice grammar?
Yes. Each group matches a structure: past tenses, used to and the present perfect, or the second conditional.
