How to use them
Before you ask
Adult ESL learners talk more when the questions treat them as adults: their work, their home, their time, and the opinions they already hold in their first language.
Many coursebooks give grown professionals the same prompts as teenagers: favorite color, dream holiday, best friend at school. Adults answer politely and switch off. Questions about the end of a long workday, an errand you secretly enjoy or a work habit someone taught you get real answers, and real answers use real vocabulary.
For evening classes of tired working adults, start with the everyday group; it needs no preparation. Save the last group for when people are relaxed. Those questions draw longer, more personal answers and make good material for a short writing task afterward.
Good for
Tips
- Answer the first card yourself, honestly. Adults open up when the teacher does.
- Let learners choose their card from three. Choice matters more to adults than to kids.
- Turn one good answer into a two-minute writing task: “Write what your partner told you.”
- Note useful words learners reach for and teach them in the next lesson.
- Avoid questions that expose income, status or immigration details in a mixed group.

Frequently asked questions
What should I talk about with adult ESL students?
Everyday life (routines, errands, home), work and study habits, and their views on time and priorities. These are topics adults already have plenty to say about.
How is teaching conversation to adults different from kids?
Adults need topics that respect their experience and a reason to speak. Give them choice, honest models from the teacher and space to disagree.
Are these questions okay for a workplace English class?
Yes. They avoid private topics like salary, religion and politics. For questions built around meetings and teamwork, see the business English page.
