How to use them
Before you ask
A good English conversation club has a light opening round, one main discussion with questions people actually have opinions about, and a short closing round, so newcomers can join in and regulars still get something new.
Clubs usually struggle with two things. Strong speakers take over while beginners stay quiet, and the topics (“Let’s talk about technology”) are too broad to start a real conversation. Small tables of four or five with a host solve the first. Specific, personal questions solve the second: what matters to you more now than it used to is a better discussion than “What is important in life?”.
Run the opening round around the table with everyone answering. For the main discussion, the host reads one card, two or three people answer, and others respond to them, not to the host. Close with one card each, answered in a sentence or two.
Good for
Tips
- Keep tables to four or five people; a host for each table if you can.
- Write two useful phrases on a card at each table (“I see what you mean, but…”).
- Mix levels at each table, but never put one beginner alone with fluent speakers.
- Change the main questions every week, keep the format the same.
- End on time. People come back to clubs that respect their evening.

Tips for the table host
The host doesn’t teach. They keep the turns fair and the questions moving.
- Go around for openers, so every newcomer speaks in the first five minutes.
- Ask the quiet person by name, with an easy follow-up: “What about you, is it the same for you?”
- Bridge answers: “Maria said X. Does anyone see it differently?”
- Watch the clock. Ten minutes per main question, then move on while it’s still lively.

Frequently asked questions
What should we talk about at an English conversation club?
Start with easy personal openers, then move to one or two discussion questions people have real opinions about, like what matters more to them now or what they are outgrowing. Specific questions work better than broad topics.
How do you run a conversation club with mixed levels?
Use small tables with a host, an opening round where everyone answers, and useful phrases on the table. Ask quieter members easier follow-ups by name.
How long should a conversation club session be?
About an hour works for most groups: ten minutes of openers, forty of discussion and a short closing round.
