How to use them
Before you ask
Faith questions invite someone to tell the story of their faith rather than recite what they believe. Asking about a Bible story they still remember, someone who helps them know Jesus more, or a season when God felt quiet but not absent opens a conversation that a doctrinal question would close.
They fit one-on-one conversations best: a mentor and mentee, two friends from church, a parent and a grown child, a couple. They also work in a small group that already trusts each other. Start with how faith started, which is warm and story-shaped, before moving to everyday faith and the honest questions.
Make room for doubt. The third group is there on purpose, because a faith conversation where nobody admits a question isn’t much of one. Listen without correcting. For group openers, see Christian conversation starters or the Lifegroup & Faith deck.
Good for
Tips
- Ask for a story, not a statement of belief.
- Answer it yourself, especially the honest questions.
- Don’t correct doubts. Listen to them.
- Pray together afterward only if you both want to.
- Come back to the last group in a few months and see what’s changed.

Faith questions
Frequently asked questions
What are good questions to ask about someone’s faith?
Ask about their story: a Bible story they still remember, someone who helps them know Jesus more, an ordinary moment when they noticed God, and a faith question they’re still carrying. Story questions invite more honesty than doctrine questions.
How do I talk about faith without it getting awkward?
Share your own experience first, ask open questions about everyday faith, and don’t debate. Listening without correcting makes it safe for the other person to be honest.
Are these questions only for Christians?
They’re written for Christians and mention God and Jesus. For questions about stillness and letting go that reach a little wider, see the spiritual questions page.
