How to use them
Before you ask
Grandparents are full of stories that nobody asks for. Not because the family doesn’t care, but because “how are you, Grandma” gets “fine, how’s school” and the call is over. Questions to ask your grandparents work when they are specific and a little old-fashioned: a game they played as a child, a meal that became a memory, the first place that felt like home.
Start with easy openers about their days now, so it feels like a chat, not a recording session. Then ask about when they were young and let them wander; the best stories come from the detours. Many grandparents moved at some point, across a country or an ocean, and questions about places and the people who welcomed them tend to open the longest stories.
On a video call, ask one question per call and really listen. Write down what you hear, or record it if they’re happy for you to. In Filipino families, lolo and lola can read every card in Tagalog. And if a question brings up something sad, let them steer. You can always pass.
Good for
Tips
- One good story per call is better than ten quick answers.
- Ask before you record, then keep the recordings somewhere the family can find them.
- Bring a photo to the visit and ask about it.
- Let the youngest grandkid ask; grandparents rarely say no to them.
- Repeat back a detail they told you last time. It shows you were listening.

Frequently asked questions
What are good questions to ask your grandparents?
Questions about their childhood, the places they lived, the people who were kind to them and the lessons they still believe. Specific questions, like the game they played for hours as a kid, get stories instead of one-word answers.
What should I ask my grandparents before it’s too late?
Ask about the places that shaped them, someone who taught them a skill they still use, a difficult time they’re proud of getting through, and what they’d tell their younger self. Write the answers down.
How do I talk to my grandparents on a video call?
Start with something easy about their day, then ask one story question and give them time. Short, calm calls with one good question work better than long calls full of quick ones.
Are these questions available in Tagalog for lolo and lola?
Yes. Every card in the Kumustahan app has an English and a Filipino/Tagalog version, so grandparents and grandkids can each read the one they’re comfortable with.
