How to answer deep questions when your mind goes blank

Most advice is about asking good questions. This is about the other side: the moment someone asks you something real and every eye at the table turns to you.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

Reflect№ 06

A note

Patience is not always passive. Sometimes it is the steady work of staying kind while something takes time.

In short

The idea

When a deep question catches you off guard, buy a few seconds (“Ooh, let me think”), then answer a smaller version of it with one specific story. You don’t owe anyone your whole inner life. A true, small answer is better than a big, polished one, and “I’d like to pass on that one” is always allowed.

This is for anyone who freezes on the spot: at a conversation night, in a small group, on a date, or when a friend suddenly asks what you’re afraid of.

Good for

  • Conversation nights and small groups
  • Dates that go deep fast
  • People who freeze when put on the spot
  • Practicing on your own

Tips

  1. Say “let me think” instead of rushing.
  2. Shrink the question to this week or one part of life.
  3. Tell one specific story, not a summary of yourself.
  4. Share only the layer you’re comfortable with.
  5. Pass kindly when you need to, then hand the question back.

Decks for this

Take a beat, out loud

Silence feels longer to the person answering than to everyone else. Saying something like “Good question, give me a second” fills the gap and tells the table you’re taking it seriously. A sip of water works too. Nobody minds waiting for an honest answer; they mind a rushed one that says nothing.

Answer a smaller version

Deep questions are often huge: what matters most to you, what you’re afraid of, who you’re becoming. You don’t have to answer the whole thing. Shrink it to this week, this year, or one area of life. “Lately, at work, the thing I’m most nervous about is…” is a real answer to a fear question, and much easier to give.

Tell one story instead of a thesis

When people try to answer a deep question well, they reach for a summary of themselves, and it comes out vague. A single specific moment is easier and more interesting: the night you realized you wanted to leave a job, the conversation that changed how you saw your mom. Let the story carry the meaning; you don’t need to explain it afterward.

Decide how much to share

You set the depth of your own answer. Share the layer you’re comfortable with in this room, with these people. “The part I can say tonight is…” is honest and keeps the rest private.

Watch the opposite trap too. With people you’ve just met, a very heavy answer can leave the table unsure how to respond. If something big comes up, it’s fine to name it briefly and save the rest for a one-on-one later.

How to pass gracefully

Every good conversation game lets you pass. A few ways to do it without killing the mood:

  • “I’m going to pass on this one, but ask me again some time.”
  • “That’s a big one for tonight. Can I answer the next card instead?”
  • “I don’t have an answer yet. I want to think about it.”
  • “I’d rather hear yours first.”

Hand it back

When you’re done, turn it around: “What about you?” It keeps the conversation shared and takes the spotlight off you. And when someone else answers a deep question, thank them. People who feel thanked for honesty tend to do it again.

The questions

Deep questions to practice on

Real cards from the app, from medium to deep. Try answering one to yourself before you’re asked it at a table.

Medium ones to warm up on

5 questions

Real questions with a manageable size.

  1. Which part of this season asks for more patience from you?

    Back of the card

Patience is not always passive. Sometimes it is the steady work of staying kind while something takes time.

  2. What helps you keep going when the next step is not clear?

    Back of the card

You do not need the whole map to keep moving carefully. Sometimes enough light for one step is still enough.

  3. Point to one pattern you notice in your week, like energy, mood, time, habits, or relationships.

Magbanggit ng isang pattern na napapansin mo sa week mo, like energy, mood, time, habits, o relationships.

    Back of the card

Understanding a pattern is already movement. You do not have to fix everything before you begin to notice.

  4. After a busy or tiring season, how can people tell that you’ve actually rested?

    Back of the card

Real rest often shows up quietly: more patience, more jokes, clearer thoughts, or simply a softer face.

  5. Pick one habit you want to adjust in a small, realistic way.

    Back of the card

Change does not have to be dramatic. One small adjustment can make tomorrow a little kinder.

The big ones

7 questions

Shrink these to this week or this year.

  1. What are you afraid might happen if you rest, delay something, or do less for a while?

    Back of the card

The fear behind busyness is worth hearing. It may show what has been asking too much from you.

  2. When pressure builds, what part of you feels like you have to handle everything alone?

Kapag tumataas ang pressure, anong part mo ang feeling kailangan mong saluhin lahat mag-isa?

    Back of the card

The proving part may have been trying to protect you. It can be thanked without letting it run the whole week.

  3. Name one choice you keep repeating that you want to understand better.

Magbanggit ng isang choice na paulit-ulit mong ginagawa at gusto mong mas maintindihan.

    Back of the card

Repeated choices are quiet storytellers. Looking closer can help you ask what they are protecting, feeding, or avoiding.

  4. Which fear has been making decisions for you lately?

    Back of the card

Fear can sound practical when it wants control. Noticing its voice helps you decide with more freedom.

Minsan practical pakinggan ang fear kapag gusto niyang kontrolin lahat. Kapag napansin mo siya, mas may freedom kang pumili.

  5. What kind of rest, fun, or treat are you learning to enjoy without feeling bad about it?

    Back of the card

Enjoyment can take practice, especially when you are used to earning every pause. This question leaves room for that.

  6. When and where do you feel safe enough to be yourself?

Kailan at saan mo nararamdaman na safe kang maging ikaw?

    Back of the card

A place like that matters. It lets people meet the version of you that is not busy performing.

  7. Name one apology you owe yourself.

    Back of the card

An apology to yourself can name what was unfair, ignored, or too heavy. It can begin without being perfect.

Hopes, said out loud

3 questions

Often the hardest to answer and the best to hear.

  1. Name one hope you are protecting because it matters to you.

    Back of the card

We often protect the hopes that feel tender. You can hold it carefully without pretending it does not matter.

  2. Say one brave thing you can admit you want.

    Back of the card

Wanting can feel risky when the answer is not guaranteed. Naming the desire is already a brave kind of honesty.

  3. What do you like more about yourself than you used to?

    Back of the card

Would you appreciate the same thing in another person? Your story can stay private.

How to answer deep questions

Frequently asked questions

How do you answer a deep question?

Take a moment, answer a smaller, specific version of it, and tell one real story instead of a general summary. Share only as much as you’re comfortable with.

What do you say when you don’t want to answer a personal question?

Pass lightly: “I’m going to pass on that one tonight” or “Ask me again some time.” In a good conversation game, passing is always allowed.

Why do I freeze when someone asks me a deep question?

Big questions feel like they need a perfect answer. Giving yourself permission to answer a small piece of it, with one story, usually breaks the freeze.
