How to use them
Before you ask
The Christmas questions kids love most are the ones that let them dream without a price tag: an invention from the future, a tiny shop they’d run, a toy blown up to their own height. They also make a sneaky way to learn what a child is really excited about this year.
December is a month of waiting, and waiting is hard when you’re six. A question on the drive to see the lights, or at bedtime with three sleeps left, turns the countdown into something to do. Keep a few in the car and a few by the bed.
Mix in the elf-duty questions too. Asking how they could cheer up a friend, or which job they like helping with, gives the season a little more giving without a lecture. Most kids have better answers than we expect.

Tips
- Turn the wish-list questions into drawings. Kids love explaining their inventions on paper.
- Ask one elf-duty question a day as an Advent-calendar habit.
- Let older siblings read the cards to the younger ones.
- Answer the silly ones yourself, with full commitment. Kids notice when grown-ups play along.
- Skip “what do you want for Christmas?” for once. They’ve been asked it all month.

Christmas questions for kids
Frequently asked questions
What are good Christmas questions to ask kids?
Imaginative ones without a price tag (an invention they’d want, a shop they’d run), cozy ones about movies and treats, and kindness questions about helping friends. They’re easy to answer and fun to hear.
How do I keep kids calm while waiting for Christmas?
Give the waiting something to do. A question at bedtime or on a car ride turns the countdown into a game, and it works better than repeating how many days are left.
Can teachers use these at a classroom Christmas party?
Yes. They are short, light and inclusive, so a teacher can read one aloud and let hands go up. The kindness questions also work for a morning meeting in December.
