How to use them
Before you ask
A club keeps members when the first meeting makes them feel they belong, not just that they signed up. Most new members decide whether to come back within that first hour, and the deciding factor is usually whether anyone talked to them.
Open the first meeting with a question that connects to why people join clubs at all: a fun activity they’d like to introduce friends to, a tiny shop they’d run just for fun, the event they’d pick if the ticket were free. Then ask what brought them here, like something new they tried out of curiosity or a hobby they want more time for. Officers learn what members actually want from the club.
As the year goes on, use the running-it-together questions to share the work: which small job someone enjoys, what makes a hangout good. At the end of the term, go around once with what each person is pleased about.
Good for
Tips
- Have officers sit with new members, not with each other.
- Start every meeting with one question, even a 60-second one.
- Plan events from what people say brought them in.
- Give new members a small job by their second meeting.
