How to use them
Before you ask
Daily questions are the small ones you ask the people you see every day. The default, “how was your day?”, has been asked so often that it gets an automatic “fine.” A different question, like what made them laugh when they least expected it, or what they did today that they’re pleased about, gets an actual answer.
This page is sorted by the moments you already share. At the door, people need a minute, so ask something easy. Over dinner, ask about the day in a way that invites a story. Before bed, keep it gentle. You don’t need all of them. One good question a day is plenty.
Rotate them so none becomes the new “how was your day?”, and answer them yourself; a kid or partner who hears your small stories will start telling theirs. For a one-a-day ritual with a whole group, see question of the day.
Good for
Tips
- Ask one good question, not five.
- Wait until they’ve put their bag down.
- Answer your own question, especially with kids.
- Rotate questions so none becomes automatic.
- Accept a short answer some days. Try again tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions
What can I ask instead of “how was your day?”
Ask something specific: what made you laugh today, what you did that you’re pleased about, or what you’d order if you were too tired to think. Specific questions get real answers.
What are good daily questions to ask your partner?
Rotate a few: an easy one at the door, one over dinner about a small moment from the day, and a gentle one before bed, like one small hope that keeps you going.
What daily questions work for kids?
Ask about the funny or surprising part of the day, or something they’re proud of. Answer the same question yourself so it feels like a conversation, not a quiz.
