How to use them
Before you ask
A deep conversation topic is a subject big enough to hold a whole evening: fear, rest, mistakes, change, hope. The difference from a list of deep questions is focus. Ten unrelated questions give you ten short answers; four questions on one topic give you one real conversation.
So choose the topic first. If a friend has been running on empty, rest and pressure is the one. If someone is facing a big decision, start with fear and courage. If the mood is reflective, at the end of a year or a hard month, change and hope is gentler. Then read the questions inside it, and pick the one that feels closest.
Stay with it. When an answer opens something, ask about that instead of moving to the next card. If you’re after a mix of deep questions instead, the deep questions page has more, and the listening guide helps with the part that matters most.
Good for
Tips
- One topic per conversation. Switching topics resets the depth.
- Go first, and answer as honestly as you’re asking them to.
- Ask about the answer before you ask the next question.
- Make passing easy. A deep topic only works when it’s chosen.
- End on hope, even if you started with fear.

Frequently asked questions
What are good deep conversation topics?
Fear and courage, rest and pressure, mistakes and self-forgiveness, and change and hope all hold up for a whole conversation. Pick the one that fits what the other person is going through, then use a few questions to go in.
How do you start a deep conversation without it feeling forced?
Choose a topic that connects to something already on their mind, ask one gentle question, and answer it yourself too. It feels natural when it follows the moment rather than a script.
How many deep topics should we cover in one night?
One, maybe two. Depth comes from staying on a subject, and four questions on one topic usually go further than twenty on many.
