How to use them
Before you ask
Dorm icebreakers work when they’re about what everyone on the floor has in common: a small room, too little space and a strong opinion about the fan setting. Start there and nobody has to share anything personal at the first floor meeting.
For RAs, that first meeting sets the tone. Ask which household item causes trouble when it goes missing, or whether they’d rather someone cook or clean for them, and people start laughing about real dorm life. Snack debates are the easiest way to get residents talking at a floor event.
The best dorm conversations happen without the RA, in the hallway after midnight, and a question about pausing time or replaying a favorite hour fits those nights. Over the semester, the last group helps a floor become a group of friends: inside lines, cheap birthday traditions, the small ways people show they care.

Tips
- Hold the first floor meeting in a circle on the floor, not in rows.
- Put a question on the whiteboard by the elevator each week.
- Pair floor events with food; snack-run questions run themselves.
- Keep a list of birthdays and pick one cheap tradition for the floor.

Frequently asked questions
What are good dorm icebreakers?
Questions about dorm life everyone shares: the ideal fan or AC setting, the household item that becomes an issue when it goes missing, snack debates, and late-night ones like when they’d pause time.
What should an RA ask at the first floor meeting?
Light, shared-experience questions that need no personal details, answered in a circle with names. Save check-ins about how residents are doing for one-on-ones.
How do you make a dorm floor feel like a community?
Regular small events with food, a weekly whiteboard question, cheap birthday traditions, and an RA who learns everyone’s name and one thing about them.
