How to use them
Before you ask
The best Halloween party question is about the costume, because every guest walked in wearing a conversation. Ask what made them pick it, what job their character would have, or which side of them the costume lets out, and the person behind the mask starts talking.
Costume parties have a particular problem: you can’t read faces, you can’t always hear, and people stick to the friends they came with. Questions that need a one-line answer work better than anything deep. Keep a few cards by the drinks or the candy bowl, where strangers already stand side by side.
Later, when the music drops and people are sitting on the stairs, ask for the embarrassing stories. They do the job ghost stories used to do: everyone has one, and the room is on the teller’s side.
