How to use them

Before you ask

The best icebreakers for kids are silly, concrete and quick to answer, so a shy eight-year-old can say “a penguin” and be done. Kids who don’t know each other rarely open up from a question about themselves. They open up when someone else’s answer is funny and they want to top it.

Most kid icebreakers go wrong in the same way: the group sits in a circle and one child at a time talks while everyone else waits. Kids drift after the third answer. Keep them moving instead. Toss a soft ball to whoever answers next, have them line up by their answer, or let pairs whisper an answer and then shout it together.

Start with the make-believe questions, move to the wild ideas once the giggling starts, and save the getting-along questions for later in the day, when the group has played together and has something to talk about.

Good for

  • Camp cabins and day camps
  • Scout and club first meetings
  • Sports team first practice
  • Birthday parties with mixed friend groups
  • Homeschool co-ops and playgroups

Tips

  1. Give your own silly answer first. Kids copy the energy of the first answer.
  2. Keep a few questions in your pocket for the pause while pizza arrives or the bus is late.
  3. Pair a quiet kid with a talkative one for the partner round, and let the quiet one choose the question.
  4. Never ask about vacations, presents or what parents do. Not every kid has an answer they want to share.
  5. End the round before anyone gets bored, ideally right after a big laugh.

Icebreakers for kids

Frequently asked questions

What are good icebreaker questions for kids?

Silly, quick ones that every child can answer equally: which animal you’d be for a day, what your tiny shop would sell, what you’d do first on a peaceful island. They get kids laughing at each other’s answers, which is how strangers become friends at that age.

How do you break the ice with kids who don’t know each other?

Get them moving while they answer: toss a ball to the next speaker, line them up by their answers, or have pairs answer together. A circle where one child talks and the rest wait loses them fast.

What icebreakers work for shy kids?

Pick a format where they can answer by pointing, moving or whispering to one partner. Let them go later in the round, after they’ve heard a few answers and know what kind of answer is okay.
