How to use them
Before you ask
A long drive with one other person is a rare chance for a real conversation: hours of shared time, no screens for the driver and no need to look at each other while you talk.
The trouble is that most long drives run on autopilot: an hour of playlist, an hour of podcast, an hour of silence. It’s a waste of the setting. A question in the first hour about the song that should play when you walk into a room or how you like to pass the time while waiting gets you talking. Then the middle of the drive can hold the longer stories, and the dark stretch near the end is surprisingly good for honesty.
Let the passenger read the cards and the driver answer. Keep the driver’s questions easy, and if the road gets busy, drop the conversation without apology. The next exit will bring it back.
Good for
Tips
- The passenger reads, the driver answers. Nobody types.
- Hold the deep questions until traffic is light.
- Swap who answers at every rest stop.
- One question can last fifty miles. Don’t rush to the next card.
- For a car full of friends, see road trip questions instead.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about on a long drive?
Start with music and road habits, move to longer stories in the middle (a ride home you remember, a plan that went wrong), and save more personal questions for the quiet stretch near the end.
Is it safe to use conversation cards while driving?
Only if the passenger reads them. The driver should never look at a phone; they just listen and answer, and pause whenever the road needs attention.
What’s the difference between a long drive and a road trip?
A road trip is usually a group adventure with stops. A long drive is often two people getting somewhere, which makes it better for one-on-one conversation.
