How to use them
Before you ask
A walk is one of the easiest places for a real conversation, because walking side by side takes away eye contact and fills silences naturally, so people say things they wouldn’t across a table.
Walks with someone you love often go one of two ways: twenty minutes of logistics (who is picking up what, what time is dinner) or comfortable silence that never turns into talk. A question about what’s around you gets the conversation going without effort. Once you’ve found a pace, the more personal questions feel lighter than they would sitting down.
Let the silences happen. On a walk, a pause after a question is thinking time, not awkwardness. If someone starts to share something hard, keep walking and listening. You don’t need to stop or fix anything.
Good for
Tips
- Start with what you can see. The street does the first few minutes for you.
- Ask one question and wait; on a walk, silence is part of the answer.
- Save the deeper questions for the return leg, once you’re warmed up.
- Keep your phone in your pocket, except to read the next card.
- Teens often talk more on a walk than anywhere else. Don’t waste it on homework questions.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about on a walk?
Start with what’s around you (something you notice, a place you would like to explore, what you would change about the neighborhood), then move to how the other person is doing once you have a rhythm.
Why is it easier to talk while walking?
Walking side by side removes eye contact and gives you something to do, so pauses feel natural instead of awkward. Many people find it easier to share something personal that way.
Are these questions good for a walk with my teenager?
Yes. Start with the light ones about the neighborhood and let them choose whether to go deeper.
