How to use them
Before you ask
The best thing to ask a stressed friend is a simple, open question (what would help this week, what can wait, what they’re carrying that others might not see) and then to listen without rushing to fix it.
When someone we care about is under pressure, we tend to jump to advice: you should sleep more, you should quit, you should talk to your boss. It usually comes from love and usually lands as one more thing to handle. A question does something different. It tells them you noticed, it lets them choose what to share, and it often helps them hear their own answer.
Ask one card, not five. Keep your voice and expectations easy, and accept short answers. You are a friend, not a counselor. If what they share sounds serious, like they can’t cope, aren’t safe or have felt this way for a long time, gently encourage them to talk to a doctor, counselor or local helpline, and offer to help them make that first call.
Good for
Tips
- Lead with an easy opener; the heavier ones are only for when they want them.
- Listen more than you talk. Resist the urge to fix it.
- Offer something specific (a meal, an errand) instead of “Let me know if you need anything.”
- It’s fine if they don’t want to talk. Staying nearby still helps.
- If it sounds serious, encourage professional help and offer to help them get it.
