How to use them
Before you ask
A milestone birthday is a natural checkpoint, and the best questions ask who you’ve become rather than what you’ve achieved. What do you like about yourself more than you used to? What can you handle better now? Which younger self makes more sense to you now?
There are two easy mistakes. One is a roast that’s all about getting old. The other is a speech-heavy night where the birthday person sits through ten toasts without saying a word. Questions give them the floor: let them tell the room what good news they’d give their younger self, or which choice from the decade they’re glad they made.
Finish with the next ten years. A brave want, a small wish for this year, a hope that keeps them going. Said in front of the people who love them, those answers have a way of coming true.
Good for
Tips
- Ask the birthday person first, then let guests answer the same question about them.
- Skip the “over the hill” jokes; they get old fast.
- Collect guests’ answers on cards for a decade-in-a-box keepsake.
- At a big party, do one question round at dessert, not all night.
- For a Filipino-style handaan, see birthday questions.

Frequently asked questions
What questions should you ask someone on a milestone birthday?
Ask who they’ve become: what they like about themselves more now, what they handle better, what good news they’d tell their younger self. Then ask about hopes for the next decade.
What are good activities for a 40th or 50th birthday party?
A question round at dessert, where guests and the birthday person answer about the past decade and the next one, plus a keepsake box of written answers. It’s personal without being a roast.
How do you make a milestone birthday meaningful?
Give the birthday person space to reflect out loud, and let friends tell them specific things they appreciate. A few honest answers are more memorable than a big party.
