How to use them
Before you ask
Deep questions for couples are not about digging up problems. They’re about understanding the person you already live your life with: what helps them feel safe, what makes a hard conversation easier, what they’re quietly worried about. Most couples never ask these out loud, not because they don’t care, but because there’s never a natural moment. A card makes the moment.
Pick a calm night with no deadline, not the evening after an argument. Start with an easy card so neither of you feels ambushed, then take turns: one reads, both answer. The questions about conflict work best when things are fine; you’re making a plan for later, not reopening last week. Listen to understand, not to defend.
These come from the Couples deck, made for two people who are already together, with a few cards from Reflect for the bigger questions about who you’re becoming. The full Couples Edition goes further. Either of you can pass any card, any time. That rule is what makes it safe to ask the rest.
Good for
Tips
- Choose a calm night; never use these to restart an argument.
- Three or four deep cards are plenty for one night.
- Repeat back what you heard before you answer.
- Write down one thing you learned, then do something about it that week.
- Either of you can pass a card, no explanation needed.
