How to use them

Before you ask

Picnic conversation should be as unhurried as the afternoon: snack opinions while the food comes out, sky-gazing questions once everyone lies back, and small favorite things in between. Nothing on a picnic needs to be deep, but it should be real.

Picnics have a lovely problem: there’s no table, no menu and no schedule, so conversation can drift into scrolling. A couple of questions tucked into the basket keep the afternoon together. Ask which color you’d change if you could change anything, or when you’d use a pause button, while the clouds go by.

Close with something warm. Ask what simple hangout you’d happily repeat, or what small thing made the day better, and you’ll probably end up planning the next picnic before you leave.

  • Spring and summer weekends

Tips

  1. Tuck two or three printed cards into the basket with the napkins.
  2. Ask the sky-gazing questions lying down, not sitting in a circle.
  3. Pick questions with short answers if kids are running around.
  4. Leave the phones in the bag for the first hour.
