How to use them
Before you ask
Picnic date questions can be slower and dreamier than restaurant ones: which animal you would want to understand, whether you would tour outer space or the bottom of the ocean, which place left a feeling you still carry. A blanket and a free afternoon invite that kind of wandering conversation.
Picnics have one quirk: there is no waiter, no check and no natural end. That is lovely, but it means a conversation can drift into scrolling side by side. A few questions tucked in with the snacks give the afternoon some shape without making it formal.
Start with the food you brought, because it is right there. The daydream questions suit the lying-down part of the afternoon. Finish with a couple of couples questions as it starts to cool; on an early date, the places group is a good place to end instead.
Good for
Tips
- Bring one snack each that the other has never tried.
- Write a few questions on slips of paper and tuck them in the basket.
- Lie side by side for the daydream questions. It’s easier to be silly looking at the sky.
- Pack a blanket big enough for both of you to stretch out.
- Leave before you’re cold. Ending on a high note matters.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about on a picnic date?
Start with the food you brought, then drift into daydreams (animals, oceans, outer space) and places that matter to you. With a partner, end with a couple of questions about the two of you.
Is a picnic a good first date?
It can be, especially in a public park in daylight. It is relaxed and easy to end gracefully. Keep the questions light and the picnic short.
What games can you play on a picnic date?
Question games work well: take turns drawing a card, or play this or that. You need nothing but a phone or a few slips of paper.
Bring a better question to the table.
