How to use them
Before you ask
Good coffee date questions are about the moment you are in: their usual drink, where they like to sit, which part of the day is easiest for them. A coffee date is short and daytime, so the conversation should be easy and a little curious rather than intense.
That short format is the point. It’s a low-stakes way to see if you enjoy talking, and both of you can leave gracefully after one cup. The risk is that it feels like an interview at a small table. Questions about habits, routines and how someone unwinds keep it relaxed and personal at the same time.
If a second cup happens, that’s your sign. Move to the deeper set: what helps them unwind, a habit that turned out to help, how they like to learn new things. Before you go, ask about plans they are looking forward to; it’s the natural opening for “we should do that together”.
Good for
Tips
- Pick a café that isn’t too loud, with seats, not just a counter.
- Get the coffee to go and walk if sitting face to face feels stiff.
- Forty-five minutes is a good length. Leave wanting more.
- Offer to pay or split simply; don’t make it a production.
- If it went well, suggest the next date before you leave.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about on a coffee date?
Start with light things around you: their usual drink, where they like to sit, their favorite part of the day. Then ask how they unwind, what they’re learning, and what they are looking forward to.
How long should a coffee date last?
Usually 30 to 60 minutes. Long enough to see if you click, short enough that it never drags.
Is a coffee date a real date?
Yes, it is just a low-pressure one. Treat it as a first date with an easy exit for both people.
