A note

Some places stay with us quietly. You may not notice it right away, but later you realize you carried something from there.

The friend who set you up

4 questions

Your one guaranteed topic. Use it.

  1. Name a place that reminds you of a funny story with friends.

    Back of the card

That place gets a new name just for this story. What would it be?

  2. Name a topic your family or friends can discuss forever.

    Back of the card

Every group has a topic that refuses to end. It keeps coming back because everyone has one more detail to add.

  3. In a group hangout, which role do you usually fall into: planner, joker, listener, snack person, or something else?

    Back of the card

Group roles can be funny because they appear before anyone assigns them. Somehow every hangout finds its planner, joker, listener, or snack person.

Minsan lumalabas yung role bago pa may mag-assign. Sa bawat hangout, may planner, joker, listener, o snack person talaga.

  4. What funny experience made you late to meet a friend?

    Back of the card

Retell the delay as a very dramatic excuse, if you like.

Low-stakes starters

6 questions

For the first ten minutes, while you both settle in.

  1. When you enter a new place, what’s one small thing you notice right away?

    Back of the card

What you notice first can hint at what makes a place feel interesting, calm, or welcoming to you.

  2. For a good hangout, what matters most: tasty food, a comfy place, or good conversation?

    Back of the card

Imagine a hangout with your top choice and nothing fancy. Where would it happen?

  3. Would you rather always arrive twenty minutes early or exactly on time?

Mas gusto mo bang laging dumating nang twenty minutes early o laging sakto sa oras?

    Back of the card

Finish if you like: "While everyone else is getting ready, I..."

  4. When the conversation goes quiet, how do you usually react?

Kapag tumahimik yung usapan, paano ka usually nagre-react?

    Back of the card

Quiet moments reveal different instincts. Some people fill the space, some enjoy it, and some suddenly inspect their drink.

May kanya-kanyang instinct kapag tumahimik.

  5. Share a funny public moment when something embarrassing happened, but you tried to stay normal.

    Back of the card

The public poker face deserves credit. Sometimes looking calm is just excellent acting with a normal facial expression.

  6. Choose your default reaction when something embarrassing happens.

Piliin yung default reaction mo kapag may nakakahiya na nangyari.

    Back of the card

Embarrassing moments reveal our automatic settings. Laugh, freeze, explain, escape: every reaction has its own logic.

Lumalabas yung automatic settings natin kapag nakakahiya. Tawa, freeze, explain, takas: may logic lahat yan.

Finding common ground

Music, childhood, the people you eat with.

  1. For one month, you can have music or movies, but not both. Which do you keep?

  4. Who do you enjoy eating with, even if the food is simple?

If there’s a spark

2 questions

A little more personal, for later in the evening.

  1. Tell us about a place that left a memory or feeling you still carry.

    Back of the card

Some places stay with us quietly. You may not notice it right away, but later you realize you carried something from there.

  2. Who knows what you like, and what do they usually get right for you?

    Back of the card

Being known can feel ordinary like that. Someone remembers your usual, your no-thanks, or the thing you always reach for.

How to use them

Before you ask

On a blind date, the easiest first topic is the friend who set you up: how you each know them, the funniest story you have about them, what they are like in a group. It gives you something in common from minute one and saves you from opening with a résumé.

Blind dates are awkward in a specific way: you can’t check their profile, you don’t know their sense of humor, and you both suspect the friend oversold you. Questions that are easy to answer and slightly funny take that pressure off. Owning your nerves helps too; a question about how they react when something embarrassing happens works surprisingly well here.

Once you are talking easily, look for common ground in music, childhood games and the people you like to eat with. Keep the two warmer questions for later in the evening, only if it feels right. If it doesn’t, you still had a pleasant dinner and a story for your friend.

Good for

  • Set-ups by friends or family
  • Church or community introductions
  • Double blind dates
  • Meeting a coworker’s friend
  • Dates arranged by a matchmaker

Tips

  1. Arrive a few minutes early so you are not flustered when they walk in.
  2. Say the obvious: “So, how do you know Sam?” is a perfectly good opener.
  3. Don’t gossip about the mutual friend; affectionate stories only.
  4. Pick a place with a time limit, like coffee or drinks, in case it isn’t a match.
  5. Tell your friend how it went, kindly, whatever happened.

Blind date

Frequently asked questions

What should you talk about on a blind date?

Start with the friend who introduced you, then move to easy, light questions about music, food and childhood. Look for common ground before going more personal.

How do you break the ice on a blind date?

Acknowledge it is a blind date and ask how they know your mutual friend. A light, specific question, like whether they are an early or on-time person, also breaks the tension fast.

What if there is no chemistry on a blind date?

Keep it friendly and short, enjoy the conversation for what it is, and thank them at the end. Not every set-up clicks, and that is fine.
