How to use them

Before you ask

A double date can go two ways. Either the two people who already know each other talk the whole time, or everyone sticks to jobs and weather. Questions that every person can answer, and that each couple answers a little differently, fix both. They also let you learn about the other couple without asking anything that feels like an interview.

Start with debates every couple has: cooking or cleaning, early or exactly on time, a full plan or a surprise. Then hand each pair a card to answer together, about a habit or a routine they share. Keep it light and public. A double date is not the place for questions only one partner should hear.

Finish with plans and stories, and maybe a trip the four of you could actually take. For a night with just your partner, see date night questions; for a bigger group, try dinner party questions.

Good for

  • Double dates at a restaurant or at home
  • Meeting your partner’s friends and their partner
  • Couples’ game nights
  • Weekend trips with another couple
  • Small group or couples’ fellowship dinners

Tips

  1. Mix up who answers: one card per person, then one per couple.
  2. Skip anything that would embarrass someone’s partner in front of others.
  3. Let couples disagree out loud. The debates are the best part.
  4. End with one plan for all four of you, even a small one.
  5. Anyone can pass a card, and so can a whole couple.

Double date

Frequently asked questions

What questions should couples ask other couples?

Light questions both partners can answer, plus a few for each couple to answer together: a routine they would miss, a chore that is easier as a team, a recent thing they laughed about. Keep it public and fun, never private.

What do you talk about on a double date?

Food, travel, small couple debates and funny stories. Ask everyone the same question, then compare answers between couples. It keeps all four people in the conversation.

How do you make a double date less awkward?

Give the table something to react to. A question like whether to arrive early or exactly on time makes each couple compare notes, and the other couple usually jumps in.

Can we use these double date questions on a phone?

Yes. They are cards from the free Kumustahan app, in English and Tagalog. Choose Icebreakers, Getting to know and a little of Couples, set it to Keep it light, and pass the phone.
